May has been pretty mad. Let me explain.
Firstly, I have had my first commission! My tutor, Marc, encouraged me to go through the pitching process for the very first time, and I’m pleased – and shocked – to say that it was successful. The article is a Have you ever…? piece for Real Travel magazine, to be published in the next couple of months. I’ve been published in yearbooks and newsletters before, but this feels different. It’s great to finally get onto that first step on the ladder (excuse the horrific cliché) without the kick-in-the-teeth of an unsuccessful first pitch.
I have also finished my first academic year on the Professional Writing FdA. It feels really weird that time has flown by so fast. Tempus Fugit, and all that. I’ve really enjoyed it actually. Full-on loved it. It’s been great to get out there and write, write, write (with a li’l help from my friends, of course).
At the beginning of May, I also attended a ‘Stars through Time’ event in Weston, where I met Colin Baker (again – he’s been to Weston before, and apparently enjoyed it) and Katy Manning, also known as the Sixth Doctor and Jo Grant. They’re really nice people; very down-to-earth. I’m always very nervous when I’m meeting anyone though; I keep thinking to myself, “Look, look, it’s the Doctor! Be cool. Be cool.” I got some stuff signed, and stopped myself from yelling out “Where the hell’s Peri?! You better not have strangled her again.”
Plus, I bought some signed photos off a dealer there, including John Simm (The Master), Christopher Eccleston (the Ninth Doctor) and… Wait for it… MATT SMITH! THE CURRENT DOCTOR! WITH A LINE FROM THE FIRST EPISODE! EXCLAMATION MARKS EVERYWHERE!
Let’s hope June’s as mad as May.
